We have been in lock down or dealing with travel restrictions now for 6 months and many of us are ready to travel. The question is, have hotels done enough to make travelers feel comfortable to hit the road again? Whether you are looking to take a family vacation, travel for business or just need a change of environment, questions abound in regard to hotel safety and cleaning protocols. I have taken two road trips this summer, stayed in 6 different hotels, and was highly impressed with the new standards in place.

Hotels are taking COVID-19 very seriously and have taken the necessary steps to sanitize sleeping rooms, public space and reduce touch-points. I can say, from recent experience, that hotels and sleeping rooms are cleaner than they have ever been.

Hotels have implemented new procedures for check in, luggage handling, room cleaning, public space and food outlets. To help you feel comfortable dipping your toe in the water again, here are some standard procedures being followed by almost all hotels.

1. Contactless check-in: Check in when you are ready via a Mobile Check-in App. You receive a notification when your room is ready, and some hotels let you utilize a Mobile Key that is right on your phone. Other hotels have your key packet ready upon arrival, reducing time interacting with the front desk staff.
2. Public space: Surfaces are cleaned with hospital grade disinfectants on a much more frequent basis. Air purifying systems are being used along with electrostatic sprayers in the guest rooms.
3. Social distancing: Front desk counters are utilizing Plexiglas partitions for additional safety. Public area furniture has been rearranged and reduced overall to maintain social spacing. Signage is posted in public areas reminding all guests of social distancing protocols and floor decals are utilized as spacing reference points.
